Tractor brooms can be used on farms, construction sites, road maintenance jobs, industrial yards, factory floors, snow removal projects, and anywhere else loose material builds up on a hard or semi-hard surface.

The most common industry applications include:

• Agriculture: Clear barn floors, equipment yards, grain pad surfaces, and feedlot aprons of manure, straw, and spilt grain.
• Construction: Sweep aggregate, sand, mud, and demolition debris from staging areas and site roads, work that otherwise falls to a crew with shovels and a lot of patience.
• Industry: Use the same attachments for routine site and yard cleaning across depots and estates.

A tractor broom clears loose surface material, such as dust, sand, gravel, leaves, and general litter. The wire and poly bristle mix in each brush segment is stiff enough to shift compacted dirt and light aggregate, while staying gentle enough for regular use on gravel driveways and unsealed yards.

The right bristle ratio depends on what you’re clearing. A higher wire content handles tougher, compacted debris like dried mud or gravel, while a higher poly content suits lighter jobs where you want less wear on the surface underneath.

Mounting varies by design:

• The AS Series couples straight onto a loader’s quick attach, suited to 35 to 50hp tractors, for fast swapping between tasks.
• The RS Series sits on a dedicated attachment frame built for larger 50 to 75hp tractors.
• The PTO Series bolts onto the three-point linkage on 35 to 40hp tractors and draws power from the PTO shaft instead of the hydraulics, freeing up hydraulic capacity for other attachments.

Tractor sweepers run on PTO or hydraulic drive systems. The right choice comes down to what your tractor already offers and what else you’re running off it.

A PTO-driven sweeper connects to the tractor’s rear three-point linkage and draws power straight from the PTO shaft. A gearbox steps that speed down to match the brush drum’s operating range. Because it bypasses the hydraulic system entirely, PTO drive suits tractors where the hydraulics are already committed to another attachment, or where you’d rather keep the two systems separate.

On the other hand, a hydraulic-driven sweeper runs off the tractor’s auxiliary hydraulic remotes instead. The brush connects directly to the motor with no chain or sprocket between them, cutting down on wear parts and giving you finer control over brush speed on the go.

Neither system is better across the board. PTO suits tractors with hydraulics tied up elsewhere, while hydraulic drive suits operators who want to adjust brush speed without leaving the cab.

Sweeping widths span 1,800mm to 2,200mm, enough to clear a farm laneway in a few passes or cover a large stockyard in a single working day.

When choosing the right tractor sweeper, it’s important to consider your tractor’s size and horsepower, mounting type, the sweeping width you need, and, for hydraulic models, whether your tractor can supply enough flow.

• Tractor size: Attachments should be sized appropriately for the tractor to ensure stability.
• Horsepower: Match your tractor’s power rating to the sweeper’s recommended range before anything else. A unit rated for a bigger tractor won’t necessarily perform better on a smaller one; the extra capacity often goes to waste, while an underpowered match leaves the brush struggling to maintain speed and ground pressure.
• Mounting type: A quick-attach system suits operators swapping between several implements, while a fixed frame or linkage mount suits a sweeper that stays on the tractor for extended stretches.
• Sweeping width: A narrower broom manoeuvres more easily in tight yards and gateways, while a wider one covers open ground, like stockyards or car parks, in fewer passes.
• Hydraulic flow: Check your tractor’s flow rate against what the unit needs before you buy. Running a sweeper below its rated flow slows the brush down and leaves debris behind instead of clearing it properly.

A tractor broom stays reliable with a few checks built into your routine, most of them quick enough to do before you climb back in the cab.

Before each use, check that the angle adjustment pins or hydraulic cylinder stroke move freely. A sweeper that won’t angle properly can’t form a clean windrow, whatever else is in good order.

Early on and at regular intervals, look over the bristle segments for wear and check that the mounting bolts are still tight. Loose bolts on a spinning brush drum are the kind of thing you want to catch early, not after a segment works itself loose.

Periodically, grease all bearing points, following the interval set out in your manufacturer’s manual. Around the same time, check hydraulic hose fittings for leaks and inspect the PTO shaft U-joints for wear.

Lastly, each season, inspect the down-pressure springs or hydraulic cylinders to confirm they’re holding correct tension. A broom that’s lost its down pressure will skate over debris instead of clearing it.
